The Temple of Meg-fu
Meg-fu is Serious Business (TM)(R)(C)(BBQ)
So, it's getting around to that time of year again. An email will also go out to those I know who've attended before and I've invited before, but if you don't get one and are interested in attending, please let me know! It'll be a night of geekery, with plenty of gaming (both at the tabletop and in front of televisions on electronic video game consoles), food, drink and a classically geeking Midnight Movie. As with last year, Wooko and I have been looking at anniversary years for this year's choice (25th: 1984 and 20th: 1989), and while there are MANY MANY good choices from 1984:

# The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
# Beverly Hills Cop
# Cloak & Dagger
# Dune
# Ghostbusters
# Gremlins
# Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
# The Karate Kid
# The Last Starfighter
# Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
# The NeverEnding Story
# Police Academy
# Revenge of the Nerds
# Romancing the Stone
# The Terminator

We're thinking of going with Cloak & Dagger. We had War Games last year, so this might be setting a Dabney Coleman precedent... but I'm pretty sure there's only one movie that can rise to the top to play for next year ^_^ It's not exactly set in stone tho, so if you have an opinion, feel free to voice it!

Because of this, I'll never be able to think of the story of The Beauty and the Beast the same again...

"So he takes her captive, and eventually she falls in love with him."

"Yes, isn't it romantic?"

"No. It's Stockholm Syndrome."

BAAAHAHAHHAHA!

So I just finished going through my Jeet Kun Do certification and instructorship. For me, it was a series of trials over the course of a week. It was a very exciting and exhilerating experience that I am very happy to have gone through. What I enjoyed most about it was being able to do things at quite elevated levels. I have to admit, in a lot of ways, I've been craving the very things I was put through. I am exited for myself in this stage of my training, I hope it means more of what I've just done. I also can't thank enough all the people who worked with me both before and during the test, especially anyone that took some good shots from me.

a bit longCollapse )

I have a damn facebook profile now. I have no idea how to link you guys to it yet though, should you want to friend me or whatever. The profile name is Christopher R Pascual if you can look me up. I guess this was gonna happen eventually. Man, a lot of you buggers on my gmail list are on facebook.

Though I guess this is really no different from when I started an LJ. I think even back then I was like, "Goddamn you people and your internet." I'll get over it soon enough, I'm sure.

This comic lampooning prejudiced suspension of disbelief actually speaks to something that bugs me sometimes. The most recent incident was talking with people who had a hard time swallowing the cell phone trick in The Dark Knight. My response was that if it was magical, or less based in the real world, it'd be easier to suspend disbelief. But Batman is supposed to be based on superhero comics, where implausable things happen all the time (and are really part of the idiom). Just because Nolan tried to make it grittier, he can't still have sci-fi hand waving for plot elements? Come on.

It amazes me how PA can inspire love for The Cock (TM) in so many people... behold the Dickerdoodle gallery. Some of that stuff is just... wrong.

It's a Rumic World

Apparently there's some roving exhibition of Rumiko Takahashi works and there are new animation for Ranma and Urusei Yatsura exclusive to it. Youtube, don't fail me now!

A wuxia film done in a Bollywood style.

Or maybe a Bollywood film done in a wuxia style?

Whether the curry got stuck in the stir fry or the stir fry got stuck in the curry, I'm pretty sure these are 2 tastes that great together. Or at least I'm hoping to discover that is so. January 16th!

Also, Gordon Liu ^_^

Though if they put out Rust In Peace as DLC for Rock Band...I will seriously have to reconsider my "I'll just play a friend's copy" stance on Rock Band...

Sun, 11/23: home, 1 mi, 11:37

I took it particularly easy on this run. I knew I could go harder, but I just wanted to get the run in. I'm going to blame the cold keeping me from moving quickly and often :/ I've also been focusing on prepping for the JKD test this Saturday and next week, so maybe after that's done with, I can get back to my regular conditioning schedule. And BTW, if any of you guys out there want to come watch the test, it starts @ 11:30a on Saturday, Dec 6, and will run to 4p or 5p or so. The school address is 810 SW 34th St #C Renton, WA 98057.

Remember that Red Cross RTS? Apparently the developer behind America's Army is making something called Virtual Peace: Turning Swords to Ploughshares, which works on simulating negotiations, logistics and other aspects of dealing with crisis from the boardroom side of things. I like it, as it could show how the organization and structure that develops between players in MMOs can be put to good use XD

**edit** Fuck, now I'm imagining a, "Ok, let's do this. LEEEEEROOOY JEEEENKIIIINS!" moment in this simulation... dammit, just... dammit.

It's long been a peeve of mine that we've left 2D graphics behind as some sort of old relic just because *can* do 3D graphics now, but I think it should just be in the toolbox to use when it's appropriate. Games can still be made really well with 2D graphics, and as the article talks about, there are certainly times where it is better than 3D, and times when it can go either way. Definitely and interesting read, and I hope the information there reaches into the heads of both developers, publishers and players.

Well, I had my 3 hour promotional session at Pierce College yesterday. For those that don't remember, I got a call from the Student Activities Department earlier this fall about holding a promotional session of martial arts at the school, and if people liked it enough, they might put the class on the school schedule. With the help of my fellow instructor Todd, I ran it as three 50 minute sessions with 10 minute breaks in between, and it turned out pretty well. A total of 15 people showed up to participate, with a few who also came by just to watch, or couldn't stay because of classes. I also handed out fliers for the classes I teach regularly in Lakewood, so I'm hoping even just one person comes and joins those classes. The supervising school staffer I've been working with that oversaw the event told me it was a really good turn out, relative to how much traffic their gym usually gets. In his words (which I'm sure is a bit of an exaggeration), "No one ever comes to the gym." Apparently because of the way campus is laid out, foot traffic doesn't easily flow towards the gym (or HEC, Health Education Center), so it takes a lot of encouragement to get people to head there. Apparently martial arts classes was enough. Since the fliers they made up all said "Kickboxing", I intended to run all the sessions as Kickboxing classes, except for the third session if it was all people who were just staying from the previous sessions. There were actually some people that stayed all three hours, and the last hour *was* comprised entirely of repeat attendees, so I gave them a taste of some JKD, which we mostly spent time on the Kali, with a little empty hand at the end. Everyone was very positive about the classes and one guy even came up afterwards to personally thank me for coming out and that he really enjoyed it. That was the same guy who said he didn't have any more experience than watching a lot of martial arts movies, but I swear he picked up on the techniques really fast, more than most people I see in on their first time. The Student Activities staffer told me the school will be looking to have me back in the Spring for six classes, once a week. The Winter schedule is already set, so it's too late for that, but I really look forward to being back there in March.

I was actually in teacher-mode for most of the rest of the day as well. I've been going to Crossfit Tacoma every Tuesday for the last few weeks. For one, to trade KB for Jujutsu with the guy there running Jujutsu sessions, and to teach a 1 hour Parkour class from 6p to 7p. Because of some traffic idiocy, I got there a lil' on the late side, but was still able to work some KB with Charles (the Jujutsu guy), which I was really hoping to be able to do since he'd done some Jujutsu work with me but I hadn't given him any KB time yet. And there was a 6 person turn out for Parkour, including one guy from the UPS club. Apparently there's a "Parkour house" this year, which I think is really cool. I'll have to try to get in touch with them and visit the house some time.

After all that, despite it being a long day, I still really wanted to go rock climbing, so I went for just about over an hour. I'm getting closer to finishing the new V3 in the archway I really like!
